The Grief Recovery Institute’s Helping Children with Loss (HCWL) program is an educational program provided by a Grief Recovery Method Specialist (GRMS) in conjunction with The Grief Recovery Institute of Bend, Oregon, USA.
The program is a complete course that needs to be undertaken in its entirety, this includes 1 onboarding call of about 40-45 minutes, prior to the beginning of the course; 6 group sessions of approximately 1-1.5 hours each and reading and homework prior to and between the sessions. Occasionally, an extra session may be necessary. This will be discussed and agreed upon by you and the Grief Recovery Method Specialist.
It is essential for the program to be effective that you attend all sessions and that you complete all assignments between sessions, to the best of your ability. The assignments will involve reading and some written components and will take about 45 - 60 minutes each. If you anticipate difficulty with this aspect, please discuss this with your GRMS prior to beginning the class. Should you need assistance with the assignments or need to rearrange an appointment, you can reach your Grief Recovery Method Specialist, Kendal Goosen, at kendal@healfulness.co.
You will need a copy of When Children Grieve, by John W James and Russell Friedman which your Grief Recovery Method Specialist will provide for you, included in the cost of the program. Electronic and audio versions of the book are also available. Please ask for details if needed.
Please contact your Grief Recovery Method Specialist as soon as possible if you can’t attend a session for any reason. You will still receive the homework assignments, however, much of the impact of the program comes from the discussion in the class and the presentation by your Grief Recovery Method Specialist.
All sessions are completely confidential. There are certain exceptions under law as follows:
Unless there is the risk of harm to self and/or to others, in which case the Grief Recovery Method Specialist will follow the GRI policy.
If we receive a court order. Where reasonably possible, the Grief Recovery Method Specialists will advise you of the need to disclose to the authorities if a court order is received and we are required to comply.
By accepting this agreement, you:
Understand that this program is for your personal use, to allow me to support the children in your care, and it does not qualify me in any way to lead others through the Grief Recovery Method or to lead others through the Helping Children with Loss program. Please speak to your Grief Recovery Method Specialist if you are interested in learning how to become a Grief Recovery Method Specialist.
You will provide an emergency contact detail for yourself in the onboarding doc provided. In most cases, the Grief Recovery Method Specialist will not need to contact them. However, if the Grief Recovery Method Specialist becomes concerned about your health or has fears for your safety, then they will make contact with your emergency contact to ensure your well-being.
You will not use this program with children until you have completed the whole course of 6 sessions.
The Grief Recovery Method Specialist may contact you about other GRM or HCWL programs or future opportunities.
You will provide information on any significant emotional events that will occur during the time you will be taking the HCWL program e.g. anniversary of divorce, separation, death or other significant loss.
